Goethe-Institut in Exile [Afghanistan]

On the occasion of Goethe-Institut in Exile [Afghanistan], Elaha Soroor and her band will perform an eclectic set of songs from Elaha's upcoming album "Geranium". Fusing sounds of Afghan folk songs with elements of rock, jazz, reggae, and dub, the set will be a musical journey paralleling the experiences of migrants and refugees. Geranium is inspired by the resilience of diasporas worldwide, showcasing that through travel and movement, people and music can blend, enhance, and enrich one another.

Elaha Soroor is a London-based musician, vocalist, composer, and designer. Born into a family of Afghan-Hazara refugees in Iran, she lived near Esfahan until moving to Kabul at the age of 14. Her works embody the complexities and nuances of society across continents, engaging and challenging audiences not only musically, but intellectually. Elaha started her musical experience as a devotional singer in a female music group in Iran, before rising to fame through the TV show Afghan Star in 2008.

Following the release of her original song “Sangsar”, which was a harsh critique on the stoning law, she became known as an outspoken artist who challenged the status quo. This popularity, in a society known for its persecution of female performers combined with passionate views on women’s rights, resulted in an environment of serious personal danger from society for her as well as her family, and she was eventually forced to flee Afghanistan. To this day, Elaha’s views and activities draw threats of danger towards her and her family members who remain in Afghanistan.

Elaha currently performs globally and designs socio-political wearable art. Her latest release “Songs Of Our Mothers”, winner of Songline’s 2020 Best Album, is a collection of folk songs by Afghan women that have been passed down from mothers to daughters. An organic blend of traditional and contemporary sounds, it serves as a bold protest against patriarchy and a joyous statement of resilience and emancipation.

Im Rahmen des Projekts Goethe-Institut im Exil [Afghanistan] werden Elaha Soroor und ihre Band ein eklektisches Set von Songs aus Elahas neuem Album „Geranium” spielen. Die Mischung aus afghanischen Volksliedern und Elementen aus Rock, Jazz, Reggae und Dub macht das Programm zu einer musikalischen Reise, die die Erfahrungen von Migrant*innen und Geflüchteten widerspiegelt. Der Titel „Geranium” spielt auf die Unverwüstlichkeit der Diaspora auf der ganzen Welt an und zeigt, dass Menschen und Musik durch Reisen und Bewegung miteinander verschmelzen, sich gegenseitig stärken und bereichern können.

Elaha Soroor ist eine in London lebende Musikerin, Sängerin, Komponistin und Designerin. Sie wurde in eine Familie von afghanischen Hazara-Flüchtlingen im Iran geboren und lebte in der Nähe von Isfahan, bis sie im Alter von 14 Jahren nach Kabul zog. Elaha begann ihre musikalische Erfahrung als Andachtssängerin in einer Frauenmusikgruppe im Iran, bevor sie 2008 durch die Fernsehshow Afghan Star bekannt wurde. Nach der Veröffentlichung ihres Protestlieds „Sangsar” (2010), das eine scharfe Kritik am Steinigungsgesetz darstellt, musste sie Afghanistan verlassen. Elahas jüngste Veröffentlichung „Songs Of Our Mothers”, die 2020 mit dem Songline Award für das beste Album ausgezeichnet wurde, ist eine Sammlung von Volksliedern afghanischer Frauen, die von den Müttern an ihre Töchter weitergegeben wurden. Die organische Mischung aus traditionellen und zeitgenössischen Klängen ist ein mutiger Protest gegen das Patriarchat und ein freudiges Statement für Widerstandsfähigkeit und Emanzipation.
