Playful and unapologetic, early 20th-century Black American music often used innuendo to approach taboo subjects like sex and drugs. This rawness combined with its catchy melodies and upbeat rhythms paved the way for rock and roll, hip-hop, house, and other American genres. We’ll spotlight some of these artists, with a special focus given to queer and women artists.
