Concrete Listening Show traces ways of listening through words, jazz, soul, house, electronic and improvisation-based music.
Today's show is spent in great company. Tuning in is the legend, author, theorist, educator and social critic bell hooks emphasising the importance to listen to black women and questioning our relationship to domination. Checking in is also Ram Dass, famed for his transformative journey and speaking on opening the heart and learning to listen. Together with the mixing engineer David Gibson, the one and only Sun Ra boards our Concrete Listening spaceship to send reminders about the death of freedom, the importance of contacting spirits and listening carefully.
This Concrete Listening Show is special in responding to the military invasion of Ukraine and the flooding of Satelite Island, ILYICHs place of birth and upbringing. ILYICH shares unreleased material from ILYICH's upcoming album afterlife. The album is an earnest take on redreaming the world after hope, as a world after the war.
Aligned with listening as a generative act, sharing thoughts on practice, on death as an equaliser, on meditation, love and discipline this Concrete Listening Show points towards the challenges and resolutions that are simultaneously practical and theoretical, empirical and conceptual, literal and metaphorical, mystical and material, political and spiritual, collective and individual, mundane and extraordinary. Carried by the sounds and rhythms of Tara Lily, Moodymann, Kenny Garrett, DJ Aakmael, Jordan Rakei and Jaco Pastorius among many others, full of heart stay tuned.
