Nik Kaestner hails from San Francisco, California, where he served as the Director of Sustainability for the local public schools. Together with his team of five specialists, he oversaw efforts to decarbonize buildings, conserve water, implement stormwater-friendly schoolyards, reduce waste, and promote alternatives to the personal car. Under his watch, energy use dropped by more than 20%, water use decreased by almost 30%, and waste diversion doubled to 65%.
Since arriving in Berlin, Nik has recommitted to a car-free lifestyle and serves as an English spokesperson for Volksentscheid Berlin Autofrei, an initiative to create the largest car-free zone in the world within the S-bahn ring.
