Hakeem Adam

Hakeem Adam is a Ghanaian digital artist-in-learning, and freelance arts and culture writer, exploring the power of narrative, transmitted through various creative outlets including poetry, creative writing, photography, video art and sound design. He is the founder and creative director of DANDANO—a Pan-African cultural platform for African film and music criticism and documentation—and has contributed to the archive of African culture for Africa Is a Country, OkayAfrica and others besides.

Hakeem’s multidisciplinary practice involves investigations into digital and physical behaviours via installations deploying sound as the predominant narrative device that confront ideas about identity, emotion, politics and freedom. Hakeem has achieved varied recognition including at the British Council’s ColabNowNow Residency, Maputo (2018); the Portraits Ghana Photo Prize (2018); and the Cryptic International Artist Residency, delivered in partnership with Cove Park in Scotland (2019).

He studied Psychology and English at the University of Ghana and is currently pursuing a MA in Digital Media from Hochschule für Künste (University of the Arts), Bremen. His work has been exhibited internationally at the CHALE WOTE Street Art Festival in Accra, Ghana (2018); Many Studios in Glasgow, Scotland (2018); Okay Space in New York, USA (2018); SPACE10 in Copenhagen, Denmark (2019), Abandon Normal Device (2021); and York Mediale (2021).

He was also an educator at the ‘New Politics & Afrofuturism’ program at The University of the Underground. Hakeem is currently developing a project with the support of the Pro-Helvetia Breathing Space Fund.
